Day 19: Bhaktapur

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

This morning we met at 7am to go get tea and nepali donuts (made with rice flour) at the rooftop restaurant we ate at last night. Then we went to the roof of our hotel for the rest of our breakfast before getting taxis to Pashupatinath, a Hindu temple where they perform purifications and cremations. Then we taxid back to our hotel, grabbed some more King of Curds, and then got lunch in a temple converted to a restaurant in Durbar Square. After finding an ATM, Travis, Cai, and I went shopping around the square. Our original goal was to find a good deal on mugs they made locally but along the way we got roped in by a vendor selling Nepali knives. As we walked by, he said "hundred, hundred, hundred." We thought he meant Nepali Rupees so we stopped to ask. But he meant 100 dollars! We said no then but he followed us around the square because he had had no business that day. By the time we finally lost him, we had gotten him all the way down to $15. Then we met everyone else back at the hotel and went to test our tea theory: "the sketchier the place, the better the tea." This held true thus far as the Kathmandu street vendor had the best tea and some of the nicer places were not as good. This place wasn't as good as it had been previous years even though it was sketchy as ever. Then we walked to the peacock window: the best woodcarving piece in the area. It was a bit underwhelming but we got to check it off our list of Nepali sights to see. After stopping in at a little paper-making place, we headed to yet another rooftop restaurant for dinner. We had fun joking with our waiter and Travis Blake and Cai even got a few pictures with him before we left. After we wrapped up there, Travis, Thomas, Cai, and I played a few quieter card games because it was hard to find a place where the noise really wouldn't bother anyone.
